Reasons for Uneven Room Heating or Cooling

reasons-for-uneven-room-heating-or-cooling

There are few things that occur in your home that are more unnerving than a room which heats unevenly. If your heating system fully breaks down, you are more than likely able to quickly realize and find the source. If your heating system just isn’t working properly, there can be an issue in trying to figure out what could be wrong, especially when trying to figure it out on your own. Here are a few reasons your rooms could be heating unevenly. Be sure to consult with a professional to be sure, but you can start by assessing how these reasons may be the cause for your problems.

Airflow is Often to Blame for Uneven Room Heating or Cooling

More often than not, the airflow in your home is what’s to blame for uneven heating or cooling in your home. While the issue of airflow may narrow down the causes for your problems, you really haven’t found your source until you figure out what the reason for the poor airflow is. You can still have many options as to why the air in your home won’t properly allow the heating system to do its job.

  1. Blocked Vents – Make sure your vents are all open and free of debris. Also be sure that there is no furniture or carpet blocking the movement of air from the vents.
  2. Closed Vents – Just as being sure the vents aren’t blocked off, you need to be sure the air vents in your home are actually open and allowing air through. There has been a long running myth that closing your vents could help conserve energy, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, it makes your heating system work harder to properly heat your home, using more energy.
  3. Closed Doors – Just as closed vents can prevent the proper circulation and movement of air, when you close the doors throughout your house, you are forcing your HVAC system to work harder to heat and cool your home, often resulting in uneven heating and cooling. This only uses more energy rather than the belief that it saves energy.
  4. Dirty Filter – At the very minimum, your air filter should be changed every two months to ensure your airflow is good and air quality is even better. If your home is a high traffic location, you should really change them out more often than that. You can even choose to use high efficiency filters that help with air quality when you do have a busy home.
  5. Fans – The settings on your thermostat can really change how your home is cooled or heated. If you typically use the ‘auto’ setting, you may want to consider changing that to ‘on’ to more effectively distribute the air your system is putting out. This is especially important in multistory homes.

Most of these are the common culprits for uneven heating or cooling in your home, and most are simple fixes you are more than capable of taking care of yourself.
